Scientists and Engineers Are CURIOUS (Grades 3–5)

by: Donna Farland-Smith and Julie Thomas

In this lesson, students learn that scientists and engineers are curious. They read about naturalist John James Audubon in the book The Boy Who Drew Birds: A Story of John James Audubon. After reading, they construct a puppet of a sandhill crane and “fly” it through its spring migration route as they learn why birds migrate and how they manage challenges along their migratory route. This selection highlights the practice of analyzing and interpreting data, and it includes the Table of Contents, Foreword, Acknowledgments, About the Authors, and Index.
