Partnerships at the Department of Education receive
$190 million for FY2006 following a House committee markup and the
House of Representatives gives final approval to an appropriations
bill for FY2006 programs at the National Science Foundation. Read

Second NSF-funded Conference to Connect with Chicago Convention;
Focus Turns to Science Assessment: Research and Practical Approaches
For the second straight year, NSTA, with support
from the National Science Foundation, will present an intensive
daylong conference in conjunction with—and one day before—an
area convention. This fall, the subject will be Science Assessment:
Research and Practical Approaches for grades 3-12, and the
conference will take place in Chicago on November 9, the day before
the start of our November 10-12 convention at the city’s famous
Navy Pier. The conference is designed to familiarize practitioners
with current NSF-funded research on the multiple forms, roles, and
contexts for student assessment in science. Approximately 25-30
presenters from the fields of science education research, instructional
materials development, assessment design, school administration,
and teacher professional development are expected to participate.

Releases New Position Statement on Use of Animals in the Science
NSTA, led by
a panel of K-12 science teachers, has developed a new position statement,
"Responsible Use of Live Animals and Dissection in the Science
Classroom." The statement examines the issues surrounding the
integration of animals into the K-12 science curriculum and highlights
key considerations that should be addressed when deciding to introduce
live animals in the classroom and involve students in dissection
activities. The statement will be a useful resource to both educators
and school officials and will help them make informed decisions
about the integration of animals in the science curriculum. NSTA
thanks its members who provided valuable feedback during the development
