Domestication: Evolving Toward Home (Student Edition)

by: Elizabeth Rice, Marianne Krasny, and Margaret E. Smith

Domestication is literally the process of bringing an organism—animal or plant—into the home. It's easy to see the evolution from wild wolf to docile dog as domestication. A domesticated plant is one that is dependent on humans for its survival, but what makes a domesticated plant? Something about the wild plant has to change. This chapter will help to understand the changes of domestication considering the hundreds of thousands of plants that exist in nature and how genetic information can help.
