This chapter describes the dominating concerns in science education over the past 50 years. It also discusses the way BSCS has addressed those concerns through curriculum and professional development and through research and evaluation. The chapter is a brief overview of secondary biology education from the 1960's to the present day, organized into six time periods. Statements from the six directors who led BSCS during those years capture the theme and educational climate of each time period.
