Falling for Science

by: Terry Kwan and Juliana Texley

Many safety books focus on chemistry, the “wet” physical science. Yet most elementary curricula appropriately concentrate on physical science that is easier to see—and more developmentally appropriate. The physical sciences provide great opportunities for teachers to examine students’ preconceptions and teach them to be logical. Exploring the physical world requires only a few basic precautions to ensure safety. This chapter discusses strategies that keep students safe during activities related to physical science concepts such as forces and motion, light, sound, and electricity.
