Through a series of hands-on labs and Bohr diagrams, students try to better understand the concepts of ionization energy and electron affinity. I really like the author's approach. Students need to see the reactions and then follow up their macroscopic observations with symbolic modeling. Too many times, educators only use the symbolic modeling and most students are lost. Students need both approaches to best understand patterns seen in families on the periodic table.
