I liked the ideas presented in this article. The article even provides a procedure/lab write up that can be distributed to the students. However, the cost of the supplies would prevent me from being able to present the lab as written. I would consider modifying the lab in this manner. I think the cost of the K’NEX to build the cars could be justified. I would use them again, they would not be too costly to replace if broken, and they are not likely to “leave” the classroom. I would also have students work in groups of 3-4 to cut down on the number of cars necessary to complete the lab. Here is my modification: I would substitute student made fan blades or sails for the purchased handheld fans. If all of the cars are built the same, the difference in “sail” features would be a very interesting twist for the student to investigate and explore. A great classroom discussion could follow on what provided the greatest “sail” effect on the car. Overall a great lab idea – just too co

This article deals with making a fan car from K’NEX parts to remove student misconceptions about motion and address the laws of motion. How to make the car is included as well as sample test results and graph, procedure, pre and post questions. This is a very doable activity for secondary students. The only drawback might be the cost of materials for multiple groups.
