Summary: This article connects the science concept of conservation (TEKS 3.7C) with the English language arts concept of poetry. The poem describes how a 1st grade class was positively influenced by studying how Rachel Carson impacted the global environmental movement. It specifically delves into conserving the life of certain bugs that are helpful to the environment, as well as other life, by discontinuing the use of pesticides. The balance of nature is fragile and it is our duty to conserve the natural resources of Earth, the planet we live on and depend upon. Reflection: This article contains phenomenal resources that I would include in a lesson plan over conservation, featuring Rachel Carson! I absolutely love poetry and anything dealing with English language arts. Therefore, I am so happy to see a lovely little poem a can use in a future lesson plan over the science concept of conserving our natural resources. Pesticides contain a harmful chemical compound called DDT, which is considered a possible carcinogen. Detrimental effects have been caused by pesticides and things will only worsen if the spraying of pesticides continues in such full force. This article truly has powerful resources to implement in conservation lesson plans, which will help students better understand the gravity of how important it is to protect our environment in order for us to remain as healthy as possible and to conserve the Earth for future generations to come.
