Education and Science Communities Honor Representative Vernon Ehlers Rep Vernon Ehlers

More than 270 individuals, including scores of members of Congress and dignitaries, gathered for an evening reception last week to honor Representative Vernon Ehlers, who is retiring at the end of the Congressional session. Rep. Ehlers (R-MI) has served in the House of Representatives for 16 years, and has been a key advocate for science and math education. Speakers lauding Rep. Ehlers for his years of service and dedication to STEM education, research and the sciences included Craig Barrett, former chairman of Intel Corporation; Alan Leshner, CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science; and Charles Vest, president of the National Academy of Engineering. NSTA served on the committee that organized the July 28 event.

From the NSTA Calendar: Addressing Global Problems with a "Sister School" Overseas

Want to develop globally based, experiential curricula while your students work with a school overseas? The National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) Challenge 20/20 program will partner U.S. public, charter, and private K–12 schools with their international counterparts to identify local solutions to deforestation, ecosystem loss, infectious disease, and other global issues. The project can develop students’ communication skills and expand their horizons. Partnerships can continue after the project ends, and other endeavors such as teacher and student exchanges may develop.

NAIS offers this internet-based program free of charge, and no travel is required. Schools need not be NAIS members to participate. Apply by August 16; learn more at the Challenge 20/20 website.

Your Input Requested for a Survey on Teaching About the Ocean

NSTA member Amy Larrison Gillan, a veteran middle school science teacher and doctoral candidate at Purdue University, is conducting a study of middle school science teachers and their teaching about the ocean. She asks for 15–20 minutes of your time to answer survey questions that will contribute to what we know about the current state of ocean literacy education in the United States. Gillan writes, "All other challenges to the world ocean aside, the current oil spill crisis is reason enough to ensure that our citizenry is ocean literate."
