Summer Professional Development Offers Educators Unique Options

Science educators can stretch their minds this summer by attending one or more of three exciting PD opportunities.

  • NSTA’s Elementary Institute planned for Aug. 5–7 in New Orleans brings together teams of administrators, coaches/teacher leaders, and classroom teachers to collaboratively work towards excellence in elementary science teaching. Esteemed educator and author Rodger Bybee and other PD experts will be facilitating strands developed for each stakeholder group.
  • The Urban Science Education Leaders Summer Academy, scheduled for August 2–5 in New Orleans, aims to positively affect student achievement through the development of school leaders who will help guide reform of the learning, teaching and assessing of science in elementary and middle schools. Teams that include a science or district science coordinator, a building administrator and three teachers are encouraged to attend.
  • ISTE’s (International Society for Technology in Education) Annual Conference and Exposition will be held June 27–30, in Denver. NSTA is the sponsor of a Science Education Technology Strand at this conference with a focus on Online Professional Development. NSTA’s full-day program includes presentations by nationally known PD experts and is scheduled for Tuesday, June 29, 10:00 am to 4:30 pm.

Post a Project and Enter the National Lab Day Video Contest

Attention all science educators, for a limited time you can win money for your school by posting a hands-on learning project on NationalLabDay.org.

What is National Lab Day? To begin, it is more than just a day. It is a nationwide movement to support science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education in our schools. It is teachers working with community volunteers and communities rallying around teachers and scientists and other STEM professionals donating their time and expertise to our schools. National Lab Day seeks to foster partnerships between teachers, schools, STEM professionals, volunteers, federal agencies, and professional organizations that will continue long after the first National Lab Day.

Visit NLD and browse projects posted by other teachers that are already live on the site. The Resources section has posts from dozens of partner organizations with cool lesson plans, games, and interactive websites. Then post your own project today!

The first place winner for the NLD online video contest will receive a $1,500 "shopping spree" on DonorsChoose.org and a Flip Video Camcorder. The second prize winner will receive a $500 "shopping spree" on DonorsChoose.org and a Flip Video Camcorder. All submissions are due by June 1, 2010. From the NSTA Calendar: National DNA Day

On April 23, the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) will honor the completion of the Human Genome Project (in April 2003) and the discovery of DNA's double helix. By celebrating National DNA Day in your classroom, you can educate students about genetics and genomics. Free teaching tools on NHGRI’s website include a downloadable education kit, Understanding the Human Genome Project; the Talking Glossary of Genetic Terms; and animated DNA Day speaker presentations and slideshows. You can also find out how to bring an NHGRI speaker to your classroom.

AAAS Project 2061 PD Opportunity Comes to Oregon in June: " Using Atlas for Science Literacy" Workshop

Do you want to learn more about AAAS's Atlas of Science Literacy, Vol. 1 & 2, and how to put it to use to improve curriculum, instruction, and assessment? AAAS Project 2061 is offering its popular professional development workshop "Using Atlas of Science Literacy" at Southern Oregon University, Ashland, June 24–26 (scholarship application deadline is May 7). Developed by AAAS Project 2061, the two-volume Atlas of Science Literacy contain 100 strand maps that present conceptual connections among the ideas and skills that all students should learn as they make progress toward science literacy. The workshop gives participants a new perspective on standards-based reform based on understanding the maps, clarifying standards, changing classroom practice, and improving curriculum. In August, we go back to the East Coast to Lebanan, NH, from the 16th to the 18th, and in September the workshops go international!
