2009 NSTA New Science Teacher Academy Fellows Announced

NSTA New Science Teacher Academy logoNSTA, in partnership with the Amgen Foundation; Agilent Technologies Foundation, Astellas Pharma US, Inc. ("Astellas"); and Bayer Corporation today announced the 185 middle and secondary science teachers from across the country who will take part as Fellows in the 2009 NSTA New Science Teacher Academy. Selected from hundreds of applications nationwide, the Fellows will participate in a yearlong professional development program designed to help promote quality science teaching, enhance teacher confidence and classroom excellence, and improve teacher content knowledge.

Representing 47 states, the District of Columbia, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, the 2009 Fellows will receive a comprehensive NSTA membership package, online mentoring with trained mentors who teach in the same discipline, and the opportunity to participate in a variety of web-based professional development activities, including web seminars. In addition, each fellow will receive financial support to attend and participate in NSTA’s 2010 National Conference on Science Education in Philadelphia.

An Educational Getaway for Science Educators

  • Increasing Student Achievement in an All-inclusive Learning Environment (Middle–High School and Supervision)
  • The "Principal" Difference: Leadership for Building a Quality Elementary Science Program(Supervision)
  • Instructional Technology and Partnerships to Promote Science Learning—Our large high school uses instructional technology to engage students in the learning process by providing authentic science experiences through design projects, competitions, and real-time data analysis. Students assess each other's outcomes and their own using quality formative assessment tools. (Middle–High/Supervision)
  • What's Matter Made Of? (High School)
  • Field Trip (ticketed): Key Largo Dive Trip—We will dive the live coral reefs of Key Largo, as well as the famous Christ Statue, very comfortably while searching for sea turtles, sting rays, eels, fish, and more. The Florida Keys reef tract is the only living coral barrier reef in North America and is the third largest coral barrier reef in the world.

Green Grants for Public School Teachers

With $150,000 in new grant funding designated for projects that integrate green-related topics and experiences into the classroom, the National Education Association (NEA) Foundation is growing its Learning and Leadership and Student Achievement grants program for individuals and teams of educators. Public school teachers are eligible to apply for individual grants worth up to $5,000 for development and implementation of ideas, techniques, and approaches for teaching green concepts. The first application deadline is October 15, and the first grants are slated to be awarded in January 2010.  The NEA Foundation will award two more rounds of green grants in 2010, with deadlines for applications falling on February 1 and June 1. Publish in the National Gallery of Writing

The National Science Teachers Association is a partner in the National Gallery of Writing, an online exhibition of writing hosted by the National Council of Teachers of English, which is seeking writing samples. NSTA’s Gallery has the following theme: Why Earth? What makes our planet the ideal cradle of life?

Science teachers and students are encouraged to submit one piece of writing that is important to them (be it a letter, digital composition, video, or other format.)  It just takes a few minutes to upload your submission, and more information is available at the gallery. The pieces will be unveiled on October 20, 2009 as part of The National Day on Writing, a nationwide initiative that highlights the variety and importance of writing in the everyday lives of Americans.

From the NSTA Calendar: National Estuaries Day

This annual celebration of estuaries, the vibrant coastal areas where rivers meet the sea, takes place the last Saturday in September. On September 26, National Estuaries Day offers an opportunity to learn more about these ecosystems and how you can help to protect them. Whether you live close enough to visit your local estuary or you transport yourself online to an estuary anywhere in the world, check out the website, which contains educational resources about estuaries and suggests simple things teachers and students can do to participate.
