NSTA Express Weekly Featured Career Opportunity

Carlbrook School is a small coeducational boarding school in southern Virginia (located about 60 miles north of Raleigh/Durham, NC) for bright, underachieving students aged 15 to 18 who are experiencing difficulty in the academic mainstream. The school currently has an immediate opening for a full-time Chemistry teacher and is looking for an enthusiastic and energetic professional who wants to make a difference in the lives of students.

While the school is still somewhat new, we have been able to offer our students an uncommonly broad and advanced level of year-round instruction for a school our size. Despite a current student census of only around 120 students, the school now provides over 50 different academic offerings, ranging from traditional core subjects to a full range of AP coursework to a variety of nontraditional electives such as Existential Literature, Middle Eastern Studies and Anatomy/Physiology. In order to assist our students in realizing their academic potential, the school offers extremely small classes (average is 8-10 students), individualized and innovative instruction, and intensive mentoring and counseling. The school currently employs some 46 professional faculty members (i.e. teachers, advisors, and other non-support personnel), of which approximately 80% hold advanced (post-baccalaureate) degrees.

The starting annual salary for this position would be $40,000 with full benefits (group health insurance and optional dental plan, life insurance, ST disability insurance, 401(k) plan w/ employer contributions, paid time off, $1,500 signing bonus to assist with relocation, continuing education benefits, etc.), which is highly competitive for this region given its low cost of living. Applicants should possess a Master’s degree in Chemistry or related subject area (or Baccalaureate degree with teaching certification in Chemistry) and at least 1 year of prior experience or equivalent student internship. If you would like to pursue this position, please contact me directly via email as soon as possible, so that we might schedule a phone interview. For those applicants selected for personal interviews on campus, the school will pay for all travel and accommodations. For more information about the school and its faculty, please visit our website at http://www.carlbrook.org.
