National Science Board Releases Science & Engineering Indicators and Issues Policy Statement on K-12 Science and Math Education

On February 23 the National Science Board (NSB) released its biennial report, Science and Engineering (S&E) Indicators 2006. The indicators provide a broad base of quantitative information on science, mathematics, and engineering education at all levels; the scientific and engineering workforce; U.S. and international research, development, and competitiveness in high technology; and public attitudes on the understanding of science and engineering.

The NSB also issued a separate companion report that provides an NSB policy statement on important policy concerns raised in the S&E Indicators report. This year the policy statement/companion report--titled “America’s Pressing Challenge-Building a Stronger Foundation”—focuses on K-12 science and math education and has many key ideas and recommendations that the science and math education communities can embrace. Discovery’s MythBusters to Headline President’s Banquet at NSTA’s National Conference, April 6-9

Myths, urban legends, old wives’ tales... How can one be sure what’s really fact and what’s really fiction? NSTA is pleased to announce that Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman, co-hosts of Discovery Channel’s popular MythBusters show, will speak at the President’s Annual Banquet at the Anaheim Conference on Saturday, April 8. And that’s live and in person! The hugely popular duo takes on three myths each week using modern-day science to show viewers what's real and what's fiction. And they do more than explain how something may or may not be scientifically possible… through trial and error they actually demonstrate it.

Member Feedback Sought on NSTA Position Statement: Professional Development in Science Education

An NSTA panel has developed a position statement on the importance of professional development in science education. The statement sets forth declarations in three major areas:

  • Principles behind professional development in science education;
  • Considerations for designing professional development in science: planning, implementing, and sustaining; and
  • Specific needs of professional development providers.

The NSTA Board of Directors approved the draft at its meeting on February 25 and now seeks input from members. Please take a minute to review this statement and give us your comments and suggestions.
