Secondary Science Teacher Reviewers Needed for New NSF Publications

The National Science Foundation will be publishing three free books for secondary science teachers—Reform in the Secondary Science Classroom, Technology in the Secondary Science Classroom, and Science as Inquiry in the Secondary Science Classroom—and teacher reviewers are needed. Editors Julie Luft, Julie Gess-Newsome, and Randy Bell are seeking teachers to review one or two of the book chapters, which are 10-25 pages long, double-spaced. Chapters will be available for review in February and March and must be completed by April 1. Teachers who complete the reviews according to the time and review guidelines will be compensated at $125 per review.

Chapters in the Books:
Scholars and teachers are writing chapters for these books. Each chapter will be reviewed by two to three teachers to determine if the chapter is clearly written, contributes to practice in the classroom, and would be useful to a teacher. All of the reviews will be shared with the authors, though reviewer identity will be omitted.

Review process:
As soon as a chapter is ready for review, teacher reviewers will be sent an electronic copy of the chapter. A two-page review form that evaluates the chapter and gives suggestions will be provided. Written comments will need to follow the guidelines (checking boxes and single space written responses). We estimate that it will take 2-4 hours to read the document and complete the review. The reviews will need to be conducted between February 15 and April 1, 2006. While manuscripts may be sent out for review as they are ready, all manuscripts will be available no later than March 15. All reviews must be returned in 2 weeks and all reviews must be complete by April 1.

Teacher qualifications:
We are looking for 75 teachers who have an interest and expertise in technology, reform, and/or science as inquiry in the secondary science classroom (grades 7-12). Any teacher interested or qualified to conduct these review should complete the following application. All reviewers will be acknowledged in the books. It should be noted that not all teachers who apply will be selected.

Compensation:
Teachers who are selected as reviewers and complete their reviews according to the guidelines, will receive a $125 stipend for each review.

Questions/Application Requests:
If you have questions about the books or the review process or would like an application, please contact Steu Mann, Steu.Mann@asu.edu.

The involvement of teachers is important in this process, and we look forward to working with teachers who are interested in contributing to these series.
