To the dismay of many, the Kansas State Board of Education adopted science standards on November 8 that contain serious errors and misleading statements regarding the theory of evolution. Disregarding the concerns expressed by many leading scientific and education organizations—including NSTA, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)—the Board voted 6-4 to adopt the standards. Also on November 8, the residents of Dover, Pennsylvania, voted overwhelmingly to oust school board members who voted to inject Intelligent Design into science classrooms. The vote came just days after the closing of testimony in the Kitzmiller v. Dover trial, which is considered the country’s first legal challenge to the constitutionality of teaching intelligent design in public schools. A ruling on the case is expected in early 2006.

Members of Congress have worked out the final funding figures for the National Science Foundation FY2006 programs, but work continues on funding levels for the Math and Science Partnership program at the U.
