U.S. Students Yield Mixed Results in Science and Math Says 2003 TIMSS

American eighth graders--especially African American students--showed significant gains in both science and math over the last 10 years, while scores for U.S. fourth graders remained relatively flat in both subjects, says the 2003 Trends in International Math and Science Study--commonly known as TIMSS--which was released earlier today. 2005 NSTA Election: Here is One Way that You Can Effect Change. Every Vote Counts!

Member ballots for the 2005 NSTA Board and Council Election are on the way. All NSTA members will vote for the following Board positions: President-Elect and three Division Directors: Multicultural/Equity in Science Education, Preservice Teacher Preparation, and Research in Science Education. Only members who reside in the following NSTA districts will casts votes for District Director:

District I: CT, MA, RI
District VI: NC, SC, TN
District VII: AR, LA, MS
District XII: IL, IA, WI
District XIII: NM, OK, TX
District XVIII: Canada

Voting is easier than ever. Members can vote online at https://www.intelliscaninc.com/nsta2005.htm using your membership number and a ballot control number (included with your ballot.) Look for detailed voting instructions in the paper ballots to be mailed to NSTA members the week of December 20, 2004. Those wishing to vote by mail ballot may still do so. Deadline for receipt of all ballots is January 28, 2005. Election results will follow shortly after the deadline. If you have any questions, please contact nominations@nsta.org.

Online Courses to Meet Needs, Schedules of Middle, High School Teachers Through NTEN; Spring 2005 Registration Open

For practicing middle and high school teachers considering online courses to meet professional goals, NTEN (National Teachers Enhancement Network) offers the following quote from "an entering middle school teacher:" "I was very excited about the fact that most of the classes could be done online, but that it was through a REAL university and not an all-online 'university.' It's important to me that I can work at my own pace when I have time at night… Also, I was drawn to the fact that this was a program for science educators to deepen their science knowledge. This wasn't a general 'learning and teaching' degree nor was it an administration degree. It's a degree to help you improve your craft and that's what I was looking for." NTEN's 30-credit graduate program is designed with science content classes from 10 academic departments, and students can select courses in line with individual needs.
