The Honorable John Boehner
Chairman
Committee on Education
and the Workforce
U.S. House of Representatives
Washington, DC 20515
Dear Chairman Boehner:
On behalf of the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), I am writing to express our support for H.R. 5186, the "Taxpayer-Teacher Protection Act."
We are very appreciative of your effort to provide financial support for loan forgiveness programs that will attract and retain quality science teachers in classrooms where they are most needed. Providing up to $17,500 in federal student loan forgiveness for deserving early-career teachers will make teaching more appealing to recent college graduates and allow thousands of individuals to consider teaching as a profession. The need to retain early-career, qualified teachers in high need classrooms is a significant challenge. The Taxpayer-Teacher Protection Act should help address this challenge while providing support to the high-priority needs of math, science, and special education. The NSTA supports and appreciates your efforts to address these concerns. Thank you.
If you have any questions or if we can be of further assistance to you in any way, please don't hesitate to contact me or Ellin Nolan at 202-289-3903.
Sincerely,

Dr. Gerald Wheeler
Executive Director
