On the Web: Global Science Education
SciLinks®
SciLinks® is a web-based service from NSTA that provides online content chosen to augment printed articles and books. It does so through keywords; the keyword for this issue is Ethnicity and Human Culture.
NSTA Calendar
The NSTA Calendar lists the following opportunities relating to Global Science Education. To learn about other science education events and opportunities, visit http://www.nsta.org/publications/calendar/.
- World Wide Biome Project
Students participating in the World Wide Biome Project learn about ecosystems in their locale and share their findings online with students from around the world. The prime focus of the website is to have students/classes evaluate a habitat in their biome and send the data in to the World Wide Biome Project. Their data is converted into a series of web pages. This allows students to learn from other projects that students like themselves have created. This project will run through 2007. Schools can sign up at any time.
- Journey North: A Global Study of Wildlife Migration and Seasonal Change
K–12 teachers and students are invited to participate this fall in Journey North’s 15th global study. Journey North enables students in 11,000 schools to track the seasons on a real-time basis. Students follow the migration patterns of monarch butterflies, bald eagles, whooping cranes, and other animals; the budding of plants; changing sunlight; and other natural events. They share their own field observations with classmates across North America and analyze data from other classrooms and professional scientists. The studies help students fit local observations and inquiries into a global context. View the website for fall start dates and a list of spring studies that start in late January.
