Quizzing Students
on the Myths of Science
The Science Teacher (November 2004)
One way to promote better understanding of the nature of science (NOS) is to
study myths of science by teaching, testing, and reflecting on these ideas at
many points during instruction. We have developed a “Myths of Science” quiz
for students that may be useful both as an assessment tool and as a advance
instructional organizer. Some of the quiz statements represent myths regarding
NOS, while others more accurately reflect NOS. These statements provide an engaging
focus on faulty notions of how authentic science really functions.

A Case for

A community-based educational (CBE) experience develops skills and knowledge in student citizens while producing a product, process, or service of value to the community. In the ideal partnership, students function as community members to accomplish this. In this example, students test the water quality of a stream.
