This teacher demonstration illustrates change of state for middle level students. Using a graphing calculator and temperature probe, the teacher demonstrates that freezing point and melting point are synonymous and that some substances can freeze at room temperature.

The Gigantic
Titanic Egg Disaster
March 1999
An iceberg-disaster simulation called the Gigantic Titanic Egg Disaster has students think of ways to protect a passenger (egg) in a boat (plastic cup) that is fated to collide with an iceberg (block of ice) at sea. Student instructions for building the boats are provided. Basic science principles involved, such as transfer of energy and momentum, are covered prior to the competition.

It's All the News: Critiquing Evidence and Claims
February 2002
To develop their ability to critique scientific claims, students evaluate the science behind articles on a fictitious Internet tabloid. These articles include references to energy conversion and elementary thermodynamics. Students critique the scientific claims, then make recommendations to the "editor" of the tabloid for ways to improve the credibility of the publication.
