Needing a New Approach to Science Labs
October 2005
In America’s Lab Report: Investigations in High School Science, a National
Research Council (NRC) committee found that labs have the potential to help
students master science subject matter, develop scientific reasoning skills,
increase interest in science, and achieve other important science learning goals.
High school graduates who attain these goals are more likely to lead productive
and healthy lives in our increasingly complex, high-tech society, notes the
article..

Explore the Earth
October 2005
Across the country and around the world, Earth science students sampled groundwater,
monitored the weather, toured mines, explored caves, visited museums and science
centers, prepared projects for competitions, and conducted investigations in
their own classrooms during Earth Science Week 2005 (October 9–15), sponsored
by the American Geological Institute (AGI).

The Sidewalk
Project
April 2005
High school physics students from Littleton, New Hampshire, conducted experiments in an effort to use alternative energy to power a sidewalk heating system. The project provided a vehicle for teaching applied physics concepts such as energy and its many forms, thermodynamics, and electromagnetism.
