Potter as a Context for Problem-Based Learning
January 2004
This innovative thematic unit for sixth-graders
builds on the Harry Potter phenomenon. Students read the book in their language
arts class, and the rest of their subjects were taught in the context of what
might have been taught at Hogwarts school. A sample unit on fungi is described.

Using Graphic Organizers
September 2003
The use of graphic organizers, which may include flowcharts, webs, concept
maps, and matrixes, can help middle schoolers to extract information from expository
text. This article describes methods for using these organizers with students,
and includes a scoring rubric. A study of eighth graders indicated that graphic
organizers benefited both above average and below average readers.

Science Literacy through Inquiry, Reading, and Writing in Nature

The Audubon Society offers professional development opportunities for teachers across all grade levels. In a workshop designed by the authors, teachers learn how to use the natural environment to teach life science, Earth science, ecology, and language arts. An overview of the workshop addresses participants’ experiences, daily activities, reading suggestions, and classroom strategies.
