A Flight
Simulator Program Takes Off
October 2003
Aviation concepts, including forces acting on an airplane, navigation, correct
aircraft terminology, and general aviation vocabulary, are often part of a comprehensive
fifth-grade aviation curriculum. But in one school district, students also learn
about flying planes and even train in a flight simulator.

Collaborating
with WISE Scientists
September 2003
Through an interactive partnership, fifth-grade students collected data on
plants and joined an active scientific community of working scientists. This
Web-based Integrated Science Environment (WISE) project involved asking questions
about plants, growing plants in the classroom, and discussing their data with
scientists online.

Parent Outreach Success
November 2001
A systemic science education reform effort underway in Massachusetts brings
together community members, educators, students, and parents to improve science
and mathematics learning at local schools throughout the state. Groups form
local coalitions to plan science/math events that meet the particular needs
of a community. Ultimately, the program's goal is improve students' science
learning statewide through greater parental and community involvement in children's
education.
