THE GREAT OUTDOORS
Children love to spend time outdoorsespecially during school
hours. Spending time out of doors can be as simple as going out
on the school grounds or as complex as a carefully planned field
trip to a nature center. Some teachers even bring the great outdoors
into their classrooms by demonstrating how a tornado forms or by
having their students study acorns. This issue is full of ideas
on ways you can celebrate Earth Science Week 2003 (October 1218).
Happy wandering!

Professional
Development
As the school year really gets under way, teachers often become
overwhelmed with keeping up with what goes on in their classroom.
Dealing with professional development issues can take a back seat
to more pressing demands. New teachers may even wonder exactly what
professional development is and what it means to them. In The
Lingo of Learning, Alan Colburn defines professional development
and professional development schools.
