New Science Teaching Approaches to be Demonstrated as Part of February 4 “Focus on Science Education Day” in Area Schools

On February 4 elected officials, area business leaders, parents and educators are participating in a variety of science education events which illustrate some of the latest techniques and newest thinking in science instruction as part of the Irving and Richardson Independent School District’s “Focus on Science Education Day.”

These new approaches to K–12 science education are based on the National Science Education Standards and advocated by a nationwide program being launched in Texas called Building a Presence for Science.

The program is sponsored by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) with funding from the ExxonMobil Foundation. In Texas the program has the support of a number of education institutions and organizations including the Texas Statewide Systemic Initiative (TSSI), the Science Teachers Association of Texas (STAT), the Texas Education Agency (TEA), and the Texas Education Service Centers.

In each location inquiry-based science teaching approaches will be used with local school children, quite possibly your neighbor’s children. The classrooms, TECH-TREK, and museums will offer a number of good photo opportunities. Representatives from NSTA, ExxonMobil, several Texas education institutions and organizations, and participating teachers will be available for interviews.

Tony Zahn—Students are involved in an electronic field trip to Antarctica by participating in an online, interactive, interdisciplinary unit over the frigid continent. Students will view three live broadcasts via satellite and during this class will send e-mail to scientists they meet on the broadcasts.
